Sure, I think there are things that print does pretty well, especially in presentation. I don't think magazines will die off completely in dead-tree form; they just will be less common. It costs an increasing amount of money to print magazines (paper, ink, overall production costs, distribution, etc.)

If most magazines are losing subscribers -- although this seems to be a bigger problem for newspapers -- it will eventually become financially unfeasible to print. Now, I think there are things like JPEG magazine (which is pretty awesome..I've seen it) that can survive, albeit with high subscription rates for people who really enjoy the finished printed product.

In the meantime, while publications are still racking in the dough from expensive ad rates based on pretty sizable subscription bases, these publishers need to invest in more avenues for revenue and secure their futures.

As for Nintendo Power, I would have KILLED to have it in electronic form when I was little. That thing never came in the mail on time!

Intereseting stuff. If nintendo power had a free web based "magazine" I'd check it every month, read it through. Certainly the ad-revenue (flash aps, straight click through ads, etc) would bring in the cash that nintendo would lose out on in the subscriptions.

But there is a certain tangibility to the print-world that I love... I am torn b/c I love the onset of the digital ink age, but I LOVE when a magazine is printed correctly. Go pick up a design annual or a copy of JPEG magazine. The print and paper quality there can't be beaten even on the best designed and executed site.

Was Egon Spangler right when he once said "Print is dead"?
